Women's Health Q & A

What happens during a women’s health exam?

A women’s health exam, also called a well-woman exam or an annual exam, is a preventive care appointment your doctor entirely personalizes based on your age, current health concerns, and family and personal medical health history. Your women’s health visit at Family Health Associates may include:

  • Birth control counseling, prescribing, or intrauterine device (IUD) insertion
  • Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) if you’re menopausal
  • Sexually transmitted disease (STD) screening
  • Body mass index (BMI) calculation
  • Osteoporosis screening
  • Blood testing or urinalysis
  • Pap smear or pelvic exam
  • Breast exam

If you’re pregnant or wanting to become pregnant, your women’s health visit can include additional testing and a schedule for preconception or prenatal visits.

Or, if you’re struggling with sexual dysfunction or bladder leakage due to labor and delivery or menopause, you can request nonsurgical vaginal revitalization treatments with Cynosure® TempSure™ Vitalia.

Do I need a women’s health exam every year?

It depends. In general, the team of women’s health practitioners at Family Health Associates want to see you once a year for an annual exam for preventive care. But because the team cares for women of all ages, they encourage you to come in other times, too, like if you:

  • Experience pelvic pain
  • Think you might be pregnant
  • Recently had your first menstrual period
  • Are experiencing symptoms of menopause
  • Are diabetic, have high cholesterol, or have hypertension

These are just some of the circumstances that require additional care outside of your routine visits and annual exams.

How do I prepare for a women’s health exam?

Family Health Associates’ practitioners welcome you to come in for a new patient evaluation or anytime you’re sick or in pain. To help you get established with the practice and to ensure your health care plan is as comprehensive as possible, it’s helpful to:

  • Write down all prescriptions, over-the-counter drugs, and supplements you take
  • Request your medical records from your previous provider
  • Make a list of any questions or concerns you have
  • Learn about your family medical history

If you need laboratory testing, such as a blood draw to check your cholesterol, you might need to fast for several hours before your visit. But the team at Family Health Associates can let you know if this applies to you when you schedule your women’s health appointment.

Schedule your women’s health appointment at Family Health Associates today. You can conveniently book an exam over the phone.
